DENVER -- Buckley air force base officials said they are hoping the city of Aurora will not approve a proposed subdivision next to a runway.Once miles from the city, Buckley Air Force Base is right next to the housing subdivisions. Military official said they are concerned the houses are getting too close for comfort. A new zoning change may bring more houses and subdivisions to the area, if approved.Aurora's mayor said the zoning change is all part of a planning process and will go through the appropriate zoning change process. He indicated that they will not approve any plans to build homes near the base if it potentially jeopardizes the $1 billion in annual revenue the base generates for the community.
Builders and developers in the area said the area around the E-470 corridor is highly marketable and will generate a great deal of new interest in Aurora as a place to live and a place to shop."I don't mind it. I'm entertained when (planes) come in," said Aurora resident Krista Skuce.Buckley officials said they worry encroachment will eventually shut them down. Some residents said they don't mind living close to the base."Obviously we have some depressed neighborhoods and some newer neighborhoods, but we have to look at the revenue the air force base brings to us and the people it brings to the city," said Skuce."It's the sound of freedom," said Charles Roach, Aurora resident. "We like seeing blue angels and thunderbirds coming across. We love it."The new zoning change goes before the Aurora City Council Aug. 28.
