Motorcycle Hit And Run Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

Man Reportedly Drove 14 Miles With Motorcycle Embedded In Truck Grille

POSTED: 6:41 a.m. MDT September 11, 2001

A man accused of killing a motorcyclist and driving 14 miles with the motorcycle embedded in his truck's grille has pleaded innocent to all charges in the case.

Abel C. Acosta, 25, of Pueblo, pleaded innocent Monday to charges including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and driving under restraint.

Acosta surrendered to authorities May 27, a day after he allegedly rear-ended a motorcycle on U.S. 50 near Penrose.

Steve Luther, 38, of Penrose, was thrown from his motorcycle and died.

Acosta reportedly fled the scene of the accident, driving 14 miles with the motorcycle embedded in the truck's grille before he abandoned the truck near Pueblo West and fled on foot.

Acosta's license was suspended in 1998 for lack of insurance and he had an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a traffic charge.

District Court Judge John Anderson on Monday set a trial for Dec. 10. Acosta will return to court Nov. 8 for a pretrial hearing.

Acosta remains in the Fremont County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.
