AURORA, Colo. -- A homeowner shot and killed a man who the homeowner said tried to force his way into the home Tuesday morning. It happened in the 1700 block of Fulton at about 8:30 a.m."The intruder used a window that was partially opened with an air-conditioning unit to gain entry into the home and climbed inside," said Detective Bob Friel. "At that point he was confronted by the homeowner and the intruder was shot one time with a shotgun."
Police said the man was rushed to the hospital but died from his wounds. The homeowner's 12-gauge shotgun was held as evidence."This was obviously a brazen crime to try to make entry during the day," said Friel. "Possibly the intruder thought that the occupants of the home were gone, maybe at work, perhaps."Friel said investigators are looking at whether the shooting falls under Colorado’s so-called "make my day law." It allows residents to use deadly force on intruders if they believe their life is in danger."It's very early in the investigation and the "make my day law" is something that detectives are looking into," Friel said.Friel also said the homeowner had been burglarized in the past. The investigation into the shooting is continuing and no names have been released.
