DENVER -- The House adjourned for the day after passing only one bill during their fourth day of a special session on illegal immigration. The Senate sent several bills to the governor, including a measure raising the age for common law marriages to 18. Still unresolved were the two major sticking points bogged down in the Senate -- a plan by Democrats to ban state services to illegal immigrants and a bill that would require job applicants to prove citizenship.
The House voted 46-17 to approve a measure (Senate Bill 2) that would require the state Supreme Court to rule within 30 days of the filing of briefs in challenges to decisions by the state Title Board on ballot initiatives. The bill now goes back to the Senate for consideration of amendments. After passing the bill tightening the rules for the Supreme Court, the House adjourned, waiting for the Senate to act on the major issues still remaining. Meanwhile, the Senate approved a bill putting a measure on the November ballot asking voters whether the attorney general should sue the federal government seeking to force it to enforce immigration laws.
