Qwest Refuses Code Red Refunds
Qwest Says It Was Not Their Fault
POSTED: 3:59 p.m. MDT September 5, 2001
DENVER -- There will be no refunds for Qwest DSL customers who were plagued by the Code Red virus.
Qwest said that it has a permanent fix to the Code Red computer worm but won't credit the accounts of customers whose internet service was disrupted.
The company said that it decided against customer credits on the grounds that Code Red was a crime that affected internet users around the world and was not the fault of Qwest.
Code Red disrupted the service of some digital subscriber line, or DSL, customers using some Cisco Systems modems.
Qwest and Cisco developed software to protect modems from Code Red. Customers who need to install it are being notified.
