Family Says Woman Killed At K-Mart Did Not Know Shooter

DeBell Had Been Working One Week At Store

Investigators are still trying to figure out why a gunman walked up to a K-Mart in Englewood and opened fire, killing an off-duty employee and injuring a customer.

The woman who was killed had worked at the store for a week. Kathy DeBell used to work up in Boulder but that was a quite a drive from Englewood, so she started the job at the K-Mart to be a little closer to home, her family said.

"The main thing about Kathy is that she was just good to everyone. And that's why it's so difficult, because she would never do anything to hurt anyone else," said Robert Thompson, DeBell's stepfather.

Thompson said DeBell always had a smile on her face. He said she liked her new job at K-Mart.

"Obviously a troubled man was looking to lash out at someone because she obviously didn't know him," Thompson said.

The suspect, Anthony Law, was arrested across the street from the store at an apartment complex where he'd lived for several years.

"I've known Anthony, like I've said, just as a neighbor, for several years. And he's just always kept to himself. Very few visitors," said Connie Sisneros, the suspect's neighbor.

The victim's family members said they don't know what to make of the suspect.

"No matter what happens to him or what his motives were or what's going on, nothing's going to bring Kathy back, so we don't think about it that much. We know the poor man must have been a very troubled person," Thompson said.

DeBell's death has been a double whammy for her family. Her mother was in Omaha Sunday taking care of a deceased brother's personal effects when she received the phone call about her daughter.

The other woman who was shot in the shooting, Claudia Nunez, remains in critical condition.
