DENVER -- In just over three months, the Transportation Expansion, T-REX, Project will be completed, and The Narrows will have to start shopping for a new name. The section of Interstate 25 between Broadway Street and University Boulevard was nicknamed because the highway is lower than the surrounding neighborhood. However, after T-REX is through, a more apt description might be The Canyon."We can't quite call it The Narrows anymore, because what we've been doing for the past five years obviously is widening out the highway quite a bit," said T-REX spokesperson, Joy Wasendorff.
Although it's close to completion, work isn't quite finished yet. The ramp at Broadway Street and southbound Interstate 25 will still be closed for another five weeks. However, on the upside, the ramps at Downing Street and Emerson Street are set to open very soon. The T-REX project, in addition providing light rail along the southbound side of I-25, will include artwork along the high walls that line the highway.Art panels will have pictures of teepees, buffalo and native grasses to provide a break from the normal concrete wall of the highway. For commuters, the three months until completion can't come soon enough.
