Dog Attacked, Killed At Dog Park

UPDATED: 7:22 pm MDT June 6, 2006

A dog was attacked and killed by two other much larger dogs at a local dog park last week.

Owner Linda McCormick's dog was attacked right in front of her by two other dogs. The attack happened at the Happy Tails Dog Park near East 104th Avenue and Irma Drive in Northglenn.

Aggressive dogs are not permitted in the park.

McCormick said she had just arrived at the park when two large dogs she thinks were part pit bull, attacked her schnauzer, Bandit.

"The dog had a death grip on Bandit and he bit through my hand and finger to get to his throat," McCormick said.

Bandit was pronounced dead soon after.

"He was treated like a king. He was my baby," McCormick said. "But it was all over in seconds."

McCormick questions whether certain breeds of dogs, like pit bulls, belong in off-leash enclosures like Happy Tails Dog Park. "I want people to know it happened to my dog and it could happen to their pet or it could happen to their children."

The city of Thornton says its vicious animal ordinance is enforced, but in all the chaos, the owners and their two dogs got away.

"It really is enter at your own risk because you don't know what other dogs are in there," said Jennifer Wing, of Northglenn Code Enforcement. "You don't know their vaccination history or their aggression history."

McCormick said Bandit was attacked while she was right next to him. "He never had a chance."
