CU Police Make Prescription Drug Bust

Student, Roommate Face Drug Charges

POSTED: 6:56 am MDT May 9, 2006

University of Colorado police are calling it one of biggest prescription drug finds on campus, after a 19-year-old student was arrested for investigation of 11 felony and distribution charges.

James Michael Lea was arrested Sunday, and investigators raided his Willard Hall dorm room on Monday. The Boulder Daily Camera reported that the investigators found more than 80 items, including about 30 pills including Oxycontin, Xanax, Phenobarbital, Ambien, Lunesta, Temazepam, Clonazepam, Vicodin and Percocet.

Lea's roommate, Joshua David Olson, was arrested Monday on suspicion of possessing two Lunesta pills and drug paraphernalia, and on suspicion of underage drinking.

The investigation began Sunday morning when a housing security officer called campus police after seeing Olson throw up in the bathroom and appear disoriented as he made his way back to bed.

Campus police officers were unable to wake up Olson and called paramedics.

Lea, meanwhile, allowed police to search the dorm room according to an arrest warrant obtained by the Camera. Police arrested him after conducting a search.

Police said they have arrested Lea twice before, once for cutting open a UPS box in the campus police headquarters lobby. Police watched him on close-circuit camera and took him into custody when he cut open the box. They found a small amount of marijuana on him at the time, the Camera reported in its Tuesday editions.

CU police Lt. Tim McGraw told the newspaper that the bust was one of the biggest prescription-drug finds on campus.

"Even though this is a substantial amount, by campus standards, it's likely the tip of an iceberg," McGraw told the Camera.
