ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. -- A man accused of stealing copper pipe with his pregnant wife and baby was scheduled for surgery Wednesday after his leg was broken when copper pipe fell on him at a location he was allegedly burglarizing.Arapahoe County Sheriff's deputies were called to Western States Fire Protection at 7026 South Tucson Way just before 1 a.m. Wednesday by a woman who said heavy copper had fallen on her husband's leg and he couldn't move.Investigating deputies contacted an employee of the company who said he was unaware of anyone being in the business yard. They found Bernadette Salinas, 20 and Toby Chavez, 20 in the enclosed yard of the company and Chavez was found pinned by copper pipe. Salinas had her 20-month-old baby with her, according to deputies. She also said she was seven months pregnant.
According to deputies, the heavy pipe fell on Chavez while he was attempting to steal it. The pipe was so heavy that he and his wife couldn't move it and that's when she called for help. Chavez was taken to Swedish Hospital with a broken leg.Salinas allegedly told deputies that she and her husband were at the business to steal copper pipe and that they had done the same thing several weeks before. Both parties were released pending the filing of trespass and theft charges, according to deputies.
