WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- There are stories all the time of men who try to grab girls off the street or lure girls into their cars. But this time, a man grabbed the wrong girl. And he's paying for it.A 14-year-old brown belt in karate said she was walking home from a grocery store last Friday when a man in his 30s tried to talk to her. When she refused to converse with him and told him to leave her alone, he grabbed her, she said.
"Before karate, I would have frozen up and simply stopped breathing," said Brittney Richardson. "Instead, I calmly turned around and struck the man in the face. He then fell to the ground and I ran. As soon as I was safe in my own home I called the appropriate authorities.""She's been training for about two years and when she was first here, she was very, very shy," said Amanda Christensen, owner of Mile High Karate in Westminster. "Her brother was doing a lesson and she decided she wanted to try it. And now, she has blossomed into a quite a young lady. She's very outgoing and she's very skilled."As a result of the attack, Mile High Karate in Westminster, where the teen trains, is holding a women's self-defense clinic for ages 14 and up that will be free to the community."It's about empowerment. Martial arts empower you to take control of the situation and only use force in an appropriate situation. They are taught here to take appropriate action. We teach them once we take control of the situation, they get out," said Christensen.
