Man Wins Colorado's First Powerball Prize

Aurora Resident Takes Home $100,000 Prize

Although there was no grand-prize winner in Saturday night's $4.2 million Lotto jackpot, a 29-year-old Aurora man is thanking the Powerball gods.

Joshua Stanforth became the first to claim the $100,000 prize playing Colorado Powerball.

"My wife, Kelley, actually found out we had won," said Stanforth. "We bought our tickets on Saturday morning and Kelley checked the numbers in the paper the next day. I was still in bed when she came running in the room screaming about something. That's not the way most people like to start a Sunday morning, but when I found out we had won $100,000, I didn't mind so much."

Stanforth matched all five of the white balls chosen in Saturday night's $66 million drawing. The jackpot winning combination was: 16-20-24-26-46- PB 9.

The Stanforths purchased their winning ticket at the Texaco station on the corner of Iliff and Havana in Aurora. They purchased 20 Quick Pick tickets for the drawing. The first line on the first ticket turned out to be the winning combination.

"At first we thought about giving the tickets to our friends," said Stanforth. "On Saturday night, we play poker and were tempted to use the tickets as one of our bets. Luckily, we didn't. I think it's safe to say, that would have been the biggest hand of poker any of us would have been a part of."

Stanforth received a check for $100,000 ($68,000 after tax withholding). The couple says that they will use some of the money to lower their monthly mortgage payments.

Kelley said that she is going back to college next fall and that the money will help pay her tuition.

More than $1.6 million in Powerball tickets was sold for Saturday night's $66 million drawing, officials said. Overall, the Colorado Lottery paid out $494,348 in prizes.

The estimated jackpot amount for Wednesday night's Powerball drawing is $75 million.
