CBI Puts Sex Offenders' Photos On The Web

Bureau Scrambles To Calm Public Fears, Comply With New Law

Photos of repeat sex offenders released from state prisons last week are being posted on the Internet as the Colorado Bureau of Investigation scrambles to calm public fears and comply with a new state law.

Gov. Bill Owens ordered the bureau to speed up the process of posting information and photographs of the most dangerous offenders, said Owens' spokeswoman, Amy Jewett Sampson.

Discussion

Worried parents, victims and others called police around the state after 74 convicted sex offenders were released last week.

The state Supreme Court ruled last year that some sex offenders were improperly sentenced to lengthy parole terms. On Monday, the court voted not to rehear arguments in two cases, a decision that affects more than 1,500 sex offenders.

A state law requires the agency to post pictures and descriptions of people convicted of multiple sex offenses or a felony sex crime and a violent crime. Sex offenders who haven't registered with local police are also required to be posted.

CBI Deputy Director Al Stanley said 21 workers were researching the backgrounds of the newly released sex offenders and determining their whereabouts.

Michael Igoe, agent in charge of the CBI's Crime Information Center Unit, said the court's ruling last Monday caught the CBI and other agencies by surprise.

"What we have now is scrambling to try to catch up," he said.
