Police: Suspect Tried To Run Down Officer

Denver police are investigating an officer-involved shooting near downtown Denver that left one man dead Thursday morning.

The shooting happened at 699 W. 29th Ave., just behind Coors Field -- seven blocks west of Broadway -- about 4:39 a.m.

Police were called by a resident of the Metro Apartments who said there were two people trying to break into cars on the second level of the parking garage.

Officers entered the garage and confronted two men, and one officer fired his gun.

"During the course of the search, the officers encountered two suspects, which ultimately resulted in one suspect sustaining a fatal gunshot wound," said Detective John White. "The second suspect was apprehended inside the parking structure after a short foot pursuit."

Denver police haven't released an explanation about why the officer fired at the suspect but there were reports that the man had tried to run over one of the officers with his car.

Police closed of the second and third levels of the garage while combing for evidence. They concentrated on a white Honda Accord -- the most-stolen car in Denver -- that had front-end damage.

It's not known if the damage occurred before or after the shooting.

"I peeked in and saw a car that was wrecked. That's all I got to peek in and see 'cause they were kicking me out of the area," said Nicole Luett, who lives in the Metro Apartments building.

She said the building's garage doors have been inoperable for some time.

"So pretty much anybody has free access," she said.

Other residents said it's not the first time crooks have targeted the building.

"I'm single, I live by myself. I'm on the first floor so I was really nervous about my safety and security within the building," said Meghan Hetherington, a building resident.

Denver police are not releasing the name of the suspect who was arrested, the suspect who was killed, or the officer involved in the shooting.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
