FEDERAL HEIGHTS, Colo. -- The Federal Heights City Attorney planned to brief the City Council Tuesday night on the investigation into a strip club where the mayor worked.Police raided the town's only all-nude club over the weekend, while Mayor Dale Sparks was working as a bouncer. Eight people were arrested and Sparks was questioned for two hours and then released.Sparks, 55, said Tuesday that he thought everything was OK at the Bare Essence nightclub because police checked out the establishment when he started work there as a doorman April 1, 2005. His job entailed checking IDs at the door and collecting the cover charge.
He said he had no idea anything was wrong until police officers stormed the nightclub Saturday night. Two dancers were charged with prostitution, and three others were charged with performing lap dances, in violation of city code. Club owner Leonid Tsodikov and a disc jockey were charged with violating city code and with complicity.Sparks told police that he hadn't been in the back of the club and was unaware of any illegalities. He said he took the job to pay for his health insurance because the mayor's position doesn't pay enough. He said he will no longer work at the club while he is mayor and will recuse himself from any city discussions involving the club.
