Four Arrested In Fatal Longmont Gang Attack

Police Say Suspects Are Norteno Gang Members

POSTED: 4:56 am MDT April 18, 2006

Four people are now were behind bars in connection with a fatal gang attack on Longmont teenager.

Police said that a group of people jumped Martin Garcia, 17, Saturday evening. During the assault by multiple assailants, the victim was hit with baseball bats and other club-type instruments and then stabbed in the abdomen with a large knife or sword, according to police.

Police said the assault was gang-related and was carried out by members of the Longmont Nortenos.

Late Monday, police announced the arrest of Adam Mizones and Oscar Lozano. Mizones was held for investigation of second-degree murder and first-degree assault. Lozano was arrested for investigation of second-degree assault.

Then on Tuesday evening, police also arrested two additional suspects. Two brothers -- 18-year-old Joseph Rodriguez, Jr. and 20-year-old David Rodriguez -- are facing charges of conspiracy to commit second-degree assault and second-degree assault.

Police said that Mizones was carrying a large samurai sword when he was arrested and that both Rodriguez brothers are Norteno gang members.

Police said more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

The attack occurred in the 200 block of 21st Avenue in north central Longmont. It has so shocked the neighborhood that city officials are calling a community meeting on gang violence Thursday evening.

Investigators say the victim was just getting out of his car and crossing the street to a friend's home when he was attacked by a group of seven Hispanic males in their early 20s or late teens.

Garcia's slaying came three days after a man was wounded in an apparently unrelated gang shooting in Longmont.

Police said Garcia was married and had an infant son but he may have had ties to a rival gang. Police Commander Craig Earhart said Garcia's family said he was trying to distance himself from gang activity. His family and friends said he was not a gang member.
