Columbine License Plates Go On Sale

Proceeds Do Not Go Directly To The Columbine Victims Fund

Specialty license plates commemorating the Columbine tragedy are now available in Colorado.

The plates were unveiled Tuesday morning, and they feature the state flower, sno-capped mountains, a blue sky and the phrase "Respect Life."

Proceeds from the sale of the new plate will not go directly to the Columbine Injured Victims' Fund, but clerks will hand out envelopes for donations to the fund.

Critics of the plate said that its "Respect Life" slogan could be read as an anti-abortion message, and convinced lawmakers to turn down the specialty plate in April. But Colorado's Revenue Department later approved the plate.

The $35 fee for the plate will go to the Highway Users Tax fund.
