BOULDER, Colo. -- A former University of Colorado cross-country track runner agreed through a plea bargain through her attorney and on Thursday pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor racial intimidation charge and was sentenced to work four days with a jail crew and 40 hours community service.Jackie Zeigle also received an 18-month deferred sentence handed down by Boulder County Judge David Archuleta, the Daily Camera reported. Defense attorney Philip Bienvenu entered the plea for Zeigle, of South Jordan, Utah, who was not in court.A police report said Zeigle and former CU football player Clint O'Neal, who are both white, sent the typo-filled message to Greg Castro, a Hispanic cross-country runner. It called Castro a "river rat" and "border hopper" and "bean eating peace of (expletive)."
The message suggested O'Neal would drag Castro behind his car, an apparent reference to the 1998 dragging death in Texas of James Byrd Jr., a black man. Police said the message was sent from O'Neal's account on an Internet portal for college students. O'Neal, who was charged in the case, told the court in February he had nothing to do with the message. He is scheduled for trial May 16. In December, O'Neal was suspended and Zeigle quit the sports programThe incident was one of several racially tinged incidents in Boulder over the past year.
