Driver's License Good For 10 Years
For Drivers Over 60 Years Old, New Licenses Good For 5 Years
DENVER -- If you don't like to stand in line to renew your driver's license, there's good news.
Starting July 1, if you go to the DMV to get a new driver's license or renew your existing one, it will last a whole lot longer.
Drivers between the ages of 21 and 60 will get a license good for 10 years. Drivers 61 and older will get a five-year license.
Studies show that the change will not compromise safety. Lawmakers last year approved doubling the license term from five years to ease congestion at motor vehicle offices.
The Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicle Group said that waiting times have increased as Colorado's population has boomed in recent years.
A 10-year license will cost $15.60 while five-year licenses will be $8.10.
Motorists will still be able to renew by mail.
