Broker In Ecstasy Drug Sale Sentenced

Sale Led To Death Of Louisville High School Student

A 18-year-old was sentenced to a year of probation and 100 hours of community service for setting up the sale of ecstasy that led to a friend's death.

The woman was also ordered to write a letter of apology to the family of Brittney Chambers (pictured, left) and undergo random drugs tests while on probation.

The unidentified woman fought back tears during her sentencing in Boulder on Thursday. She has not been publicly identified because she was 17 at the time of the crime.

She was convicted in April of conspiracy to sell ecstasy to other students at Louisville's Monarch High School.

The students bought the drug for Chambers' 16th birthday party. Chambers went into a coma after taking a pill Jan. 27 and died a few days later.

The Boulder coroner ruled that Chambers died because she drank so much water after taking ecstasy that her kidneys shut down and her brain swelled.

The 18-year-old sentenced Thursday admitted that she set up the deal because she wanted to help a friend, Rebecca Sheffield, with money problems, according to court testimony. She arranged a meeting in a school bathroom between Sheffield, also a student, and Chambers' friends.

Sheffield, 18, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to sell a controlled substance and prosecutors have recommended probation. Her husband, Travis Schuerger, 20, is awaiting trial on charges of supplying the ecstasy.

The girls who obtained the drug pleaded guilty in the case and were given one-year deferred sentences. The girls, ages 16 and 17, admitted taking ecstasy with Chambers at her home the night of birthday party.
