I-25 Expansion Gets New Name: T-REX

Officials Withheld $20,000 Name Since Last Year

The I-25 southeast corridor project now has a new name: T-REX. The Colorado Department of Transportation and the Regional Transportation District said that it spent about $20,000 of taxpayer money to design the name for the upcoming 7-year-long expansion and light rail project. Soon, officials will be kicking off a $100,000 advertising campaign educating the public about T-REX. The name is meant to symbolize many things, including both the fact that the current highway system seems as old as the dinosaurs, and that the planned expansion is the largest in the state, 7NEWS anchor Paula Haddock said. "Does that mean it's extinct now?" one motorist asked. "Really what this is all about is size and scope, and something that can be a little bit scary," Amy Ford, of the T-REX Team, said. While many drivers said that they like the name of the massive project, others weren't so thrilled about the cost of coming up with it. "That's an awful lot of money just for a name," a motorist said. Officials admit that they've been withholding the name from the public since last August. They said that they've been weighing the risk of making taxpayers angry, especially after watching the fallout from Xcel Energy's advertising campaign. "The lessons we've learned from different experiences on renaming or trying to come up with a new identity are really that we should be careful with the taxpayers money," Ford said. "But what we thought was, people are going to have to live with this project for the next seven years. We have to have something people can enjoy, that they can have fun with. It's a little bit of a personality, that shows the good and the bad of what construction is going to be, and we really felt T-REX was representative of all that," Ford said. "I think it's great for the city. City attractions are great," a motorist said. The T-REX Team said that that it's important to have a name and ad campaign to keep drivers informed throughout the project. Part of that campaign includes an interactive website and a 24-hour toll free hotline: (877) 539-T-REX. Construction on T-REX between Broadway and Lincoln begins this summer, and the contractors -- or T-REX handlers, if you will -- are expected to be announced next week. Additional Resources:
