Elementary School Kids Taught To Skateboard In P.E. Class

Watch out Tony Hawk! The next X-games gold medalist could come from right here in the metro area!

Kids at Boulder's Douglass Elementary School are learning to skateboard in physical education class.

Boulder Valley Schools says it's the first district in the United States to offer such a class.

Instructors say they're focusing on alternative, non-competitive sports kids can do, whether they're in PE class or just hanging with friends.

"The kids loved it and if they take these activities outside of school and it keeps them active instead of in front of a TV, that's the bonus!" said Douglass Elementary principal Kelley King.

The kids all have safety equipment and are taught proper boarding etiquette.

Instructors say it's all about fun for the kids and they don't even realize they're getting some great exercise at the same time.
