DENVER -- Drivers, mechanics and light rail operators for the Regional Transportation District will remain on the job after their contract was extended on a day-to-day basis.Their contract was set to expire at midnight Tuesday, but RTD spokesman Scott Reed said the contact extension will allow them to work past the deadline.Negotiations between RTD and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1001 resume on Thursday.
Union officials said that wage issues remain on the table. In 2003, union members agreed to a three-year wage freeze. Officials hope to reach a contract by early next week. If an agreement isn't reached then, negotiations would continue on March 13. The union represents about 1,400 workers. RTD is responsible for public transportation for all or part of eight metro-area counties.
