Illegal Immigrants Flee Car Crash
Group En Route To Chicago Later Taken Into Custody
A carload of six Mexican nationals rear-ended another vehicle Wednesday, causing a three-car accident.
Three men, a woman and a boy were passengers in a Chevrolet when
it rear-ended another car and forced it into oncoming traffic,
causing a head-on collision with a third car, police spokesman Bill
Leonard said.
The driver, an undocumented immigrant, jumped into another vehicle
of immigrants that was following the Chevrolet and drove off. The group was
going to Chicago, Immigration and Naturalization Services spokesman
Tony Rouco said.
The second vehicle, along with the driver and eight other
immigrants, were later found at a hotel about 45 miles north of
Craig in Baggs, Wyo.
No one was seriously injured in the crash.
The immigrants in the car were taken into INS custody. The
immigrants at the hotel will also be taken into custody if they are
undocumented, Rouco said.
No names were released.
Since last October, 10 undocumented immigrants have died en route in
Colorado, Rouco said.
