Flames Force Evacuation Of Centennial Hall
DENVER, 5:46 a.m. MDT April 26, 2001 -- An overnight fire at the University of Denver is blamed on a suspected drug lab, police said Thursday.
The small fire was reported on the fourth floor of the south tower of Centennial Hall shortly before midnight Wednesday.
A spokesman for the university said that one student was burned and another student was cut while trying to get to a fire extinguisher in hallway. Both victims were taken to Porter Memorial Hospital.
The fire was confined to a single room, causing $5,000 in damage.
Denver police and DU Campus Safety responded to the fire and found a suspected drug lab in the burned room, authorities said.
"This is the first time in the 25 years that I've been with the university that we've seen anything like this," said Tyrone Mills of DU Campus Security.
One arrest was made by early Thursday morning, police said. The suspect is an 18-year-old student from Canada. Adam Gafney was arrested for investigation of manufacturing a controlled substance, police said.
Residents of the building were allowed to return to their rooms around 2 a.m. Thursday, but the fourth floor of the south tower remained closed.
About 600 students live in the residence hall.
