AURORA, Colo. -- The Veterans Affairs Department Hospital is a major step closer to having a new home. After months of negotiations the VA has agreed to buy 24 acres at the corner of East Colfax and Fitzsimons Parkway. The VA will pay $17 million for the land. The Fitzsimons Redevlopment Authority said it will use that money to buy land for offices and a hotel.
The VA hospital in Health Sciences Center's Denver campus is 54 years old.A federal inspection report in December 2004 said conditions at that aging, crowded hospital were so bad that patient health and safety were jeopardized. The new VA hospital at the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora will be near the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, which is in the midst of moving to the Fitzsimons site.
