Police: 'Burberry Bandit' Bagged

Teen Suspected In Gas Station Robberies, Carjackings In Wheat Ridge

Wheat Ridge police say the serial robber suspected in a two-week crime spree that involved six gas station robberies and three carjackings has been caught. Two of those carjackings failed because the suspect was unable to drive a stick shift.

It turns out that the suspect is a 17-year-old boy from Wheat Ridge, police said. His identity is not being released because of his age.

The teen was arrested on Sunday, Feb. 19, in Aurora, driving a black Honda Accord that he is suspected of stealing.

The robber was given the name the "Burberry Bandit" by police because of a Burberry of London jacket he consistently wore during several of the robberies. He had hit one to three convenience stores each night and became increasingly aggressive and violent as police closed in, investigators said.

During each of the robberies, the robber brandished a weapon or indicated to the clerk that he had a weapon. Fortunately, no one was injured during any of the altercations, police said.

Victims said the robber was a black male who was in his late teens or early 20s, with a thin to medium build. The robber either wore the Burberry jacket or a sports team-type jacket, a black ski mask and black gloves.

Patrol officers alerted local store clerks about the string of robberies and the distinctive clothing the suspect wore and then last Friday, Wheat Ridge police deployed a surveillance team to monitor several area convenience stores. That is how the suspect was eventually tracked down.

The suspect is currently being held without bond at Mount View Juvenile Detention Center.

Police are recommending that he be charged as an adult. He could face nine counts of aggravated robbery, several counts of felony menacing, and three counts of kidnapping, among other charges.

The robberies he's allegedly involved in are:
