FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A colleague of the Colorado State University professor arrested for sexual assault says the charges against the professor stem from a statement that was misinterpreted. Police arrested Dr. Boris Kondratieff on Jan. 28 on suspicion of incest, and sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust after an alleged incident involving his stepdaughter in 2003. At the time of the alleged incident, the girl was less than 15 years old, according to court records.CSU instructor Whitney Cranshaw said the allegations are untrue. Cranshaw said in a letter to The Coloradoan newspaper that the girl made an offhanded comment during a party, which a friend's mother overheard and misconstrued.
"The kind of charge involved here is absolutely ridiculous to anyone who knows anything about this wonderful person," Cranshaw wrote in the letter to the newspaper. Kondratieff is a tenured entomology professor who teaches one senior level class. He's free on $20,000.
