Driver Accused In Fatal Road Rage Bound Over

Jason Reynolds Faces Possible Death Penalty

POSTED: 9:24 am MST February 1, 2006

A Parker, Colo., man charged with first-degree murder in the traffic deaths of two people was bound over for trial Wednesday and denied bail.

Jason Benjamin Reynolds, 32, was charged in connection with the Nov. 8, 2005 accident on E-470 that killed Kelvin Norman, 50, of Highlands Ranch and Greg Boss, 35, of Lone Tree.

In addition to the first-degree murder charges, Reynolds faces two charges of vehicular homicide and two charges of violent crime causing death. If found guilty of the most serious charges, he could face the death penalty, or life in prison.

On Wednesday, the judge ruled that Reynolds should face the first-degree murder charges, even though she believes that he didn't specifically intend to kill the two men. She said his extremely aggressive driving put everyone on the road at risk and that he drove that way, knowing that his conduct could kill someone.

She also denied bail.

Since Reynolds' father is a deputy with the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department and works at the jail, Reynolds is being held at the Douglas County Jail.

The victims' family and friends, who were at the hearing, were pleased with the judge's decision.

"It's comforting to know he won't be on the road and endanger other people's lives," said Mary LaFrance, the girlfriend of Greg Boss. "I do hold some comfort that not only is it going to be pursued properly, but I also know that one of hell's hottest corners is held for Jason Reynolds."

LaFrance said she hope that this case will serve as a message to state legislators to strengthen laws against road rage.

Investigators said that Reynolds was chasing a Toyota 4-Runner when he swerved in front of the vehicle to cut him off and then slammed on his brakes.

The Toyota 4-Runner hit Reynolds' bumper, lost control, crossed the center median and flipped into oncoming traffic, landing on top of a Ford Explorer.

The drivers of both SUVs were killed instantly.

Reynolds was not hurt in the crash and allegedly told officers at the scene that he was upshifting his Jeep when his boot jammed the brake pedal.

In the arrest affidavit, Colorado State Patrol troopers said, "Reynolds seemed irritated and his attitude was indifferent to the deceased drivers of the other vehicles. He did not seem upset even though we were only 100 feet from away the other vehicles and the deceased bodies."

Troopers say Reynolds has a history of aggressive driving.

Reynolds will be arraigned on March 10.
