AURORA, Colo. -- Enforcement of the new pit bull ban in Aurora begins Wednesday and many pit bull owners waited until the last minute to register their dogs. The line at the Aurora Animal Shelter stretched outside the door most of the day on Tuesday. Some people even took the day off and spent hours getting their paperwork squared away so they can meet the deadline to "grandfather" in their dogs and get a license. Many pet owners 7NEWS talked to, including the Flores family, said their dogs are worth the extra work.
"This is my child, this is my baby," said Flores, referring to his 3-month-old pit bull Poncho. "He's a full blooded pit bull, red nose."Flores was among many who waited to get a temporary restricted breed license."It is wall to wall people and dogs, standing room only," said Cheryl Conway, with the Aurora Animal Shelter.Enforcement of Aurora's pit bull ban begins Wednesday so after Tuesday, "There is no way to obtain a license, other than to renew the one they got this year," Conway said. Some expressed disappointment with the new law."I think it's very discriminatory," said one pit bull owner. But they showed up with the list of required documentation and $200, knowing that the alternative might be losing their dog."We just want to be safe and keep everything under control with the dog," Flores said.If a pit bull is found in violation of the ordinance, owners face fines of $700 and up to one year of jail. The dog would also be impounded and if proof can't be provided that the dog will be moved out of Aurora, the court could order it destroyed.
