Baby Found Abandoned In Parking Garage

Hospital Volunteer Pulls Into Parking Space And Finds Basket

An emergency room volunteer, while looking for parking at St. Anthony Central Hospital Monday afternoon, found a large Easter basket with a baby inside, authorities said. Abandoned baby Video Hospital Workers React To Discovery Of Abandoned Baby

Mary Voita was pulling her car into a vacant spot just after 1 p.m. when she found a blanket-covered basket with a note. "I was pulling into the parking space on the third floor of our parking structure when I saw a basket in the front of that space. It was like an Easter basket with a high handle. There was a note taped to the front of it," Boita told 7NEWS. "I picked up the note, read a few lines and reluctantly looked under the blanket ... I was afraid of what I would find. Then I saw a pink foot." The infant, who weighs just over six pounds, was immediately brought to the emergency room, where she was determined to be in good condition, according to Donna Good, director of Denver's Human Services. The baby was born earlier Monday, and it was specified in the attached note that the child's name was 'Karry,' authorities said. Police believe that the note was written by the mother of the child. The infant is now resting in good condition at St. Anthony's nursery. She is doing so well, hospital officials said, that she is likely to go home with a foster family as soon as Tuesday. Mary Voita Voita (pictured, left) said that she believes that it was fate that she found the baby, who she believes was purposely left on the third floor of the parking structure, which is reserved for hospital workers and volunteers. "She is just a beautiful baby. They allowed me to stay up in pediatrics while they checked her, and I got to feed her and rock her," Voita said. "She's just fine, she's just beautiful and I think Mom should know that she's happy and being taken care of." "I'm just thrilled I found a live baby today, I'm thrilled I pulled into that spot," Voita said. "It just broke my heart to think some mother thought this was the only option available to her," said D'Anne VanGilder, a registered nurse at St. Anthony's. The Denver Police Department is searching for the mother. The Department of Human Services wants to let other mothers know that under Colorado law, if a baby is less than 72 hours old, a mother can give her baby up to a hospital employee or a firefighter and walk away without giving her name. "I believe the law only covers handing the baby to another human being," Good said. Thankfully, 7News reporter Paula Haddock said, Voita did get her hands on baby Karry, and Voita had a message for Karry's mom. "I just want her to know that her baby is beautiful, very healthy and being well taken care of, and I have a lot of compassion for the anxiety she's going through," Voita said. Anyone with any information in this case is asked to contact the Denver Police Department at (720) 913-6911. Just last month, a baby boy was found abandoned near a dumpster in a Denver alley. The mother of that child, although charged with child abuse, is now seeking custody of the child. A Colorado law approved last year gave parents immunity from prosecution if they abandon newborns with a firefighter or with a hospital worker, but it is unclear whether or not Karry's mother, if found, will face criminal prosecution. Good said that the law specified that you have to hand over the baby to a human being, and not just place the infant in a hospital or at a fire station. "In my reading of the law, the very first paragraph, says, 'Give the baby to hospital or fire personnel.'... I believe the law only covers handing the baby to another human being, but quite frankly, I am not an attorney," Good said. Related Stories:
