DENVER -- The owner of the Funky Buddha Lounge was arrested and is being investigated for first-degree assault after he shot a suspected burglar early Tuesday morning, police said.Christakes Christou, 60, was inside the lounge when Dwayne Stepp entered the front door at about 3 a.m. Tuesday, police said.Investigators believe Stepp, 44, was trying to burglarize the place when Christou fired his weapon and hit Stepp in the abdomen.
Stepp is currently in the hospital receiving medical care for his wound and is currently on a police hold for the burglary.Christou is in the Denver jail. Police say that there was enough evidence in their investigation for them to conclude that the lounge owner was not justified in the shooting. Colorado's "Make My Day" law provides legal protection to homeowners or residents defending themselves against harm, but the Make My Day Law does not apply to businesses. It will be up to the Denver district attorney to decide if charges will be filed against Christou. The popular Funky Buddha Lounge is located at 776 Lincoln Street in downtown Denver.
