Chances are you received a gift card or two for Christmas. Shoppers spent nearly $17 billion on gift cards this holiday season but it's estimated that nearly 14 percent of gift cards are never redeemed.

You can do a lot better than just putting those unwanted gift cards in a drawer. You can take your gift cards to CardAvenue.com.

It's a place to go when you want to buy, sell or trade unwanted or unneeded gift cards. The selling format looks a lot like eBay's. List the card, the value, and wait for the bids to come rolling in as the deadline approaches.

There are gift cards selling for about 75 to 80 percent of its posted value. If you want to trade, you do it pretty much at face value.

You can also wish list and write out the card or cards you want. The first step is to register and it's free.

Once the deals are made it's up to the buyer and seller to exchange the gift cards but CardAvenue.com does offer some protection against fraud. For cards over $100 the site will verify the value when possible.

For those valued less than $100, CardAvenue will protect the transaction.
