Not Guilty Plea Expected In Anti-Bush Graffiti Case

No Deal Reached In Officer's Bumper Sticker Vandalism Arrest

POSTED: 11:44 am MST December 6, 2005

An Air Force officer accused of vandalizing cars with anti-Bush graffiti will plead not guilty, his attorney said Tuesday, after talks with prosecutors failed to produce a plea agreement.

Lt. Col. Alexis Fecteau is accused of blacking out bumper stickers supporting President Bush on cars at Denver International Airport and then spray-painting an expletive over them. At least 10 vehicles were vandalized at the airport.

Fecteau is charged with criminal mischief.

Defense attorney Patrick Mulligan did not rule out a plea bargain but said prosecutors have prepared additional charges against Fecteau, complicating the discussions.

Fecteau was director of operations for reserve forces at the National Security Space Institute at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, supervising 11 full-time and 30 part-time reservists.

He was reassigned to a non-supervisory position after the charges were filed.

Police left a bait vehicle at the airport equipped with a camera that recorded an image of a suspect and his car. Police said they matched the car to footage from a camera monitoring cars leaving the parking lot and traced the license plate to Fecteau.

His attorney said previously that Fecteau was "a highly decorated colonel in the Air Force with 500 combat hours in the Gulf War, Kosovo and Bosnia. Any allegations have to be viewed in that context."

Fecteau is expected to enter a plea on Feb. 9.
