Aurora Boy Mauled By Pit Bulls Goes Home

Gregg Jones Will Require Facial Reconstruction Surgery, Mom Says

A 10-year-old boy who lost his arm after he was attacked by three pit bulls returned home from the hospital Wednesday night.

Gregg Jones was hospitalized nearly a month after the attack in his back yard Nov. 2 as he returned home from school.

"He is doing remarkably well," Gregg Jones' mother, Renee Muniz, told the Aurora Daily Sun & Sentinel. "He's home now."

Muniz said Gregg, who also has undergone facial reconstruction surgery, would need physical therapy. She said in a year, doctors will try to remove scar tissue before fitting him for a prosthetic arm. She did not know how much his medical care would cost.

Gregg was coming home from Yale Elementary School and was trying to get into his house. When he discovered that the front door was locked, he went through the back yard and was pounced on by three pit bulls. The boy was bitten on his head, throat, legs and arms, police said. Neighbors who heard his screams drove the dogs away with a bat and sticks.

One dog was shot by a police officer and had to be euthanized. The other two were being held at an animal shelter pending charges.

His mother faces possible criminal charges, and there are reports that those charges could be filed later this week.

Meanwhile, Thursday is the first day of the registration period for pit bull owners in Aurora. The city of Aurora is banning new pit bulls as of Feb. 1. Current owners will be allowed to keep their dogs if they register them in the next two months.

Owners must pay a $200 annual fee, carry $100,000 liability insurance policy, put a warning sign up at their home and muzzle the dog when it is being walked.
