ASPEN PARK, Colo. -- A Colorado fast-food eatery icon will be closing down after the land underneath it was sold. The Coney Island hot dog stand along U.S. Highway 285 in Aspen Park is frankly looking for a new owner or home after the land it sits on was sold to a bank. The area where the hot dog sits is in the middle of an economic boom, with new shopping centers being built east and west of the giant dog and bun.
Owners Lisa and Taylor Firman bought the hot dog six years ago and must move the 60s-style building by next March. The 14-ton stucco, concrete and steel struck was built in 1966 and sat on West Colfax in Lakewood, Colo., until it was moved to its present location in 1969, amid the protests of locals who said it stood out like a sore thumb.Fast-forward 25 years and now locals are upset that the 42-foot-long hot dog stand has to move. The Firman's are looking for a place further down Highway 285 to move it, possibly in Pine or Bailey, if they can't find a buyer for the unique piece of Americana. So far, they haven't had a nibble.
