Police Say Mom Sold 2-Year-Old For $2,000

Mother In Court On Drug Charges

UPDATED: 8:19 am MST November 9, 2005

The man who returned a missing 2-year-old Cleveland girl to police was charged with her kidnapping Tuesday.

Nicholas Stokes, 60, allegedly bought Savannah Stokes from the girl's mother for $2,000. Rosemary Busch, 22, told police she gave her daughter to Nicholas Stokes Aug. 1 to take her to her father in California. Nicholas Stokes is not related to the child, WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported.

Stokes' attorney contacted police last week, who worked over the weekend to get him to turn the girl in Monday. Nicholas Stokes will be arraigned in court Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Savannah is in the custody of Children and Family Services until permanent custody is decided.

Savannah's father, Miller Stokes, was in Cleveland Tuesday to argue that he is best suited to care for the little girl.

A complaint filed with the court calls Miller Stokes a "nomadic gypsy," who had no contact with his daughter for the past year. Another custody hearing is set for Dec. 15.

Busch was in court Tuesday on unrelated drug charges. She was accused of drug possession and use. She was released from jail on a $1,000 personal bond.
