GREELEY, Colo. -- A Weld County man pleaded guilty Tuesday in connection with the drunken driving deaths of two people last February.Investigators said that Tobias Sholes, 31, of Frederick, Colo., was driving under the influence of alcohol on Feb. 9 when he caused a head-on collision on Colorado 52 near Fort Lupton that killed Zuri Flores, 20, and her brother, Isai Flores, 24, also of Frederick.Troopers said both vehicles were traveling at least 65 mph when the pickup truck smashed into the 2003 Saturn, ran up over the top of the car and rolled onto its top. The impact was so strong that the pickup broke in half. Isai Flores was ejected and the Saturn rolled on top of him, the Colorado State Patrol said.
Sholes was thrown out of his pickup truck and was treated for moderate injuries at Denver Health Medical Center and released. The siblings were on their way to work at the family business when they were killed.According to investigators, Sholes had lost his license after having three drinking and driving convictions dating back to 1992 on his driving record.Sholes pleaded guilty to two felony counts of vehicle homicide and faces a maximum of 28 years in prison and up to $1.5 million in fines when he is sentenced. He is free on bond until his sentencing in February.
