Teens Bound Over For Trial In Connection With Ecstasy Death

Charges Stem From Fatal 'Birthday Gift' Allegedly Given To Brittney Chambers

Four Monarch High School teenagers have been bound over for trial on charges tied to the death of a 16-year-old Boulder County girl who took the drug ecstasy.

The teenagers, who appeared in Boulder court on Monday with their parents, are charged with crimes ranging from possession and use of a Schedule 1 controlled substance to distribution of a Schedule 1 controlled substance.

Two of the girls are set for arraignment in district court next month. The other two are scheduled for arraignment in May.

The victim, Brittney Chambers (pictured, left), apparently initially declined to take the drug when offered it the night she died, investigator Mike Abromowich testified during Monday's hearing.

It was to be a gift on her on birthday, Jan. 27.

Later that evening, Brittney decided she wanted the pill, Abromowich testified. Brittney and three of her friends each swallowed the green shamrock-shaped pills shortly after.

Brittney died Feb. 2 from complications of ingesting the drug, MDMA, or methylenedioxynmethylamphetamine. Boulder County Coroner John Meyer said the teen died from drinking too much water as a result of her ingesting ecstasy.
