BALTIMORE -- Dozens of second-grade students in Baltimore were stung after they stumbled upon a nest of yellow jackets while on a field trip near their school.Baltimore County officials said Deep Creek Elementary School's entire second-grade class -- about 100 students -- was outside the school building for an outdoor science class at about 12:40 p.m. when one of the children disturbed a tree stump containing a nest of yellow jackets. Most of the children were outside when they were stung. A few were stung by inside by yellow jackets that found their way into the school.
Teachers and school officials whisked the children away to the school building. County officials said 47 students were stung, but none was seriously injured.Earlier reports indicated that fire officials ordered the school evacuated and shut down, but school officials said that was not the case.Emergency officials said two children suffered mild allergic reactions and the remaining 45 did not suffer a reaction. Officials said having the students' medical cards on record was very helpful in determining which students were allergic. As a precaution, emergency medical crews transported 40 of the students to five area hospitals. Parents arrived at the school to pick up seven of the students.
