A teenager called police about 3:30 a.m. and claimed that she had been poisoned and needed to go to the hospital. Police found her at a local restaurant at 120th Avenue and Melody. The 14-year-old girl told police that she had been taking the drug ecstasy. She was taken to North Suburban Hospital where she was reported in stable condition.
After questioning, police learned that the girl had attended a "party" at a local motel near the restaurant.
Police went to the motel and found eight people in one room using what police believe was ecstasy. Two of the party-goers were arrested. One of them was rushed to Avista Hospital for treatment of an apparent drug reaction.
Westminster police have arrested one adult suspect, Va Lee, on charges of distributing the drug.
According to medical journals, ecstasy is actually a stimulant called MDMA. It is usually taken orally as a tablet. MDMA causes increased heart rate and blood pressure, and may lead to an elevation of body temperature that causes kidney and cardiovascular failure.
When combined with alcohol, MDMA can be extremely dangerous, abd sometimes fatal, experts warn. Chronic abuse of MDMA may produce long-lasting neurotoxic effects in the brain.
