15-Year-Old Could Get Prison Sentence, Father Gets Jail

Weld County Teen Stabbed Brother, Punched Sister In Face

POSTED: 5:11 pm MDT October 4, 2005

A Weld County teenager was found guilty Tuesday of felony charges stemming from a Dec. 17, 2004, assault in which his 18-year-old brother was stabbed and his 14-year-old sister was punched in the face.

Ryan Allen Munoz, 15, was tried as an adult in Weld County District Court. He was found guilty of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon and causing serious bodily injury.

The jury took less than three hours to deliver the guilty verdict but Munoz did not return to court when the verdict was announced.

Weld County officials had released Munoz on bond prior to the guilty verdict and when he didn't appear for the verdict a warrant was issued for his arrest. There was no explanation of why he was released.

His father, Raul Munoz, Sr., 54, yelled in the courtroom and was found in contempt by Judge James Hartmann. Munoz was ordered to serve seven days in jail on the contempt charge.

Ryan Munoz faces a sentence of between 10 and 32 years in prison when he is sentenced, but no sentencing date was set while he is at large.
