Teen Charged With Arson, Attempted Murder

Westminster Boy To Undergo Mental Competency Hearing

POSTED: 2:34 pm MDT October 4, 2005

Felony charges of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree arson were filed Tuesday against a 15-year-old Westminster boy.

The charges, filed in juvenile court, stem from a Sept. 27 incident at the boy's home in the 8000 block of Clay Drive.

Police said the teenager locked his stepfather in the basement and then lit a fire near the stairwell of the home.

The stepfather, James Misegadis, managed to escape through a basement window and call 911. The fire department extinguished the fire quickly. A city-wide alert was issued for the teen after he couldn't be located.

The boy was arrested later that night when an arson investigator spotted him walking down a street near 64th Avenue and Federal Boulevard.

The boy is not being identified by TheDenverChannel.com because he is charged as a juvenile.

He is currently being held at Fort Logal Mental Health Center. A hearing was scheduled for Nov. 9 to determine if he is mentally competent to stand trial.
