Autopsy Results Expected In Teen's Mysterious Death

Steamboat Senior Found Dead In Bed After Football Game

POSTED: 8:50 am MDT September 30, 2005

Investigators in Steamboat Springs hope the results of an autopsy on a popular high school teen will shed some light on her mysterious death.

Adele Dombrowski, 17, was found dead in her own bed Saturday morning, with no obvious signs of trauma.

Police said that Dombrowski had been drinking with friends the night before as they attended a high school football game. A 20-year-old Steamboat Springs man was arrested for giving a 1.75-liter bottle of rum to Dombrowski after buying it at a local liquor store. The liquor store was also cited for selling alcohol to a minor.

There has been speculation that drinking may have contributed to Dombrowski's death. The school system issued a statement that said alcohol may have been a factor in her death and the Associated Press erroneously reported that a nearly empty bottle of rum was found beside Dombrowski's body, a report denied by police. The AP retracted the report Wednesday.

Police Capt. Joel Rae said the rum bottle was recovered outside Dombrowski's residence with an undisclosed amount of alcohol remaining inside it.

Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said until the lab results are in, the cause of death won't be known. Dombrowski also had a history of seizures, according Ryg.

He expected to release autopsy and toxicology results Friday. A key indicator will be her blood-alcohol level, which will show how much she had to drink.

Friends said she didn't appear intoxicated at the football game Friday night.

Dombrowski was a popular Steamboat High School senior who was active in many extra-mural sports. She also danced and participated in a youth religious group.

A memorial service was scheduled for Friday afternoon in Steamboat Springs.
