WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. -- A robbery suspect shot to death by a Wheat Ridge officer was identified Thursday afternoon as a Florida man.Police were trying to arrest Shawne A. Nelson, 34, of Fort Myers, Fla., Wednesday evening in connection with several robberies and a carjacking that occurred on Sept. 20. They developed information that he was staying at the Motel 6 at Kipling and Interstate 70.When they attempted to arrest him, he fled on foot to the parking lot of another motel where police said he pulled a handgun and pointed it at officers.
He was shot and fatally wounded by an unidentified Wheat Ridge police officer. Nelson died as a result of his wounds early Thursday morning.The officer 39-year-old officer who shot Nelson was identified as a SWAT member also assigned to the special investigation unit. Police said the officer had not been involved in any shootings prior to Wednesday evening's incident.Denver police arrested a suspected accomplice of Nelson on Thursday. Willie Perez, 31, of Denver faces charges of aggravated robbery in connection with the Sept. 20 holdup at a Wheat Ridge rental shop.
