A Fort Carson soldier who recently returned from Iraq died Sunday after falling from a rock formation in El Paso County.

The soldier's name was not released, but he was believed to be in his 20s and a member of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

He was hiking with another soldier off of a trail in Cheyenne Canyon when he fell.

"They were trying to get from one point to another, and he was scrambling" when he fell several hundred feet, said Colorado Springs Fire Dept. Lt. Carl Lyman. "They were up above about 400 feet. His friend called for help on a cell phone."

He was the second soldier to die in Cheyenne Canyon shortly after returning from Iraq. In April 2004, Pvt. Nicholas Parisi, 18, fell more than 300 feet while rock.

Also Sunday, a 76-year-old man died when his car went off the Pikes Peak Toll Road near the summit of the mountain.

Officials said the man was alone in the car, which had Texas license plates. His body was recovered by an El Paso County Search and Rescue team.
