GREELEY, Colo. -- A 17-year-old driver involved in a car wreck that killed his two friends avoided prison time Wednesday when he was sentenced to one year of electronic home monitoring and five years of probation.Prosecutors said Moden ran a stop sign near Berthoud on May 25, crashing his Lexus into a truck and killing two passengers in his car, Kurtis Soeby, 18, and Shawntae Taylor, 15.Another passenger, Brendon McBride, 17, and the driver of the truck, Leslie Mechem, 68, were also hurt.
Moden pleaded guilty to two counts of careless driving resulting in death and one count of careless driving resulting in bodily injury. He also pleaded guilty to one count of disregarding a stop sign.He must perform 300 hours of public service, including speaking at schools about the dangers of reckless driving. He will be able to attend school and work during his yearlong sentence.The crash occurred on Larimer County Road 4 and Weld County Road 1, near Berthoud.Taylor died at the scene and Soeby died three days after the crash at Denver Health Medical Center. All three boys were students at Berthoud High School and Taylor had just finished her freshman year at Webber Junior High in Fort Collins. None of the teens were wearing a seatbelt, authorities said.
