Dogs Shot, Killed After They Attack Goat, Horse

Pit Bulls' Owner Cited For Having Vicious Dogs

A man shot and killed two pit bull dogs over the weekend after they attacked and killed his goat then hurt his Belgian horse, the Elbert County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday, just one mile from where an Elbert County woman was mauled to death by three different pit bulls in 2003.

Jim Ross said when he saw the dogs attacking his animals, he stuck one of the dogs with a pitchfork but it didn't kill the dog or even stop it. So Ross said he grabbed his gun from inside the home and shot both of the dogs.

The owner of the dogs, Kyle Stozek, was cited for having vicious dogs at large and arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Ross' horse was expected to recover from the attack.

Just as neighbors were being notified of the incident there was a similar incident Monday morning, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies thought they had another duo of pit bulls running loose and when the dogs were captured, they turned out to be brindle-colored Rottweilers.

The dogs were rounded up without incident and returned to their home. Coincidentally, their home was the former home of Jennifer Brook. Brook's family sold the house after she was mauled to death by three pit bulls in November 2003.

Elbert County Sheriff's Sgt. Dane Hiatt told 7NEWS that they are concerned that the pit bull problem will not go away. Denver's ban on pit bulls is only transferring people to more rural areas such as Elbert County, Hiatt said.
