CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- A 45-year-old Aurora man will stand trial on first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of his wife -- recorded on a digital audio recorder by the couple's 14-year-old daughter.

The recording was played in an Arapahoe District courtroom Wednesday at a probable cause hearing for Eddie M. Johnson. His wife, Lorraine, was shot in the head on June 12 in the front yard of their home. She died two days later.

The daughter said she had hoped to record evidence that her father was abusive to her mother. Instead, she caught the final moments of her mother's life.

The recording starts with an argument over car keys. Then a loud pop is heard, followed by cries by the two daughters of the couple.

"My mother is dead," the girl said on the recording. "He shot my mother in the head. My mom. My mom. My mom."

Police found the girl clutching an aluminum baseball bat when they arrived at the home. They arrested her father and placed him in the police car, where they said he sat calmly, placing both his legs across the back seat.

Officers had been to the home about an hour before the shooting on a call of domestic disturbance and talked to the two for about 30 minutes before leaving when Lorraine Johnson refused their help. She told the officers that her husband had a gun but that it was locked in the basement. Eddie Johnson also told officers that he and his wife could resolve their conflicts.

The two were arguing after Lorraine and her daughter returned from a softball tournament and Lorraine accused her husband of taking things from her car, including her passport. Police were told that Eddie Johnson then accused his wife of taking his iPod and laptop computer.

Just before the shooting, a voice identified by police as Eddie Johnson can be heard telling his wife to give him back his car keys. Then the gunshot is heard.

Johnson also faces an additional charge of felony menacing for allegedly pointing his handgun at his 14-year-old daughter shortly after his wife was shot.

Eddie Johnson was retired from the military and worked security at Buckley Air Force Base. Lorraine Johnson worked at a Saturn dealership.
