Police: 'Stop Snitch'n' T-Shirts Point To Alarming Trend

Shirts Convey Message Not To Cooperate With Police

POSTED: 4:07 pm MDT August 24, 2005

The growing popularity of T-shirts that tell kids to "Stop Snitch'n" have alarmed local police.

The T-shirts, which sell for about $25, are the result of a popular DVD that featured Denver Nugget forward Carmelo Anthony and promoted not telling police anything about possible crimes.

T-shirts like this one are gaining popularity after a DVD of the same name.

The two-hour DVD featured a stream of rants against people who cooperated with police. The speakers -- seen in bars and bedrooms and on the streets -- flashed guns and jewelry, threatened individuals and their families, and used what appeared to be illegal drugs and alcohol.

The DVD was produced without Anthony's approval but featured him in a segment when he returned to Baltimore to talk with some kids on the street.

"This is a terrible message to be out there," said Sgt. Rudy Herrera, an Aurora Police public information officer.

Herrera said the popularity of the shirts is particularly disturbing after a key murder witness and his fiancée were gunned down on an Aurora street.

Javad Marshall-Fields, 22, and Vivian Wolfe, 22, were shot to death in June. Marshall-Fields was to testify in an upcoming murder case.

In a statement released through the Nuggets, Anthony asked people to move on.

"It's disappointing that some people don't focus on constructive activities in their communities," his statement said.

There are several different types of Stop Snitching T-shirts -- featuring stop signs, or the outline of a gun scope, or a man pointing a handgun. Some metro area T-shirt shop employees said the shirts are big sellers. Others said they won't sell the shirts because they send the wrong message.
